Drawing a city with a pencil is quite difficult due to the fact that it is necessary to take into account the perspective, the correctness of construction, and at first it is not a drawing, but pure geometry. For those who are not familiar with the basic laws of perspective, there may be difficulties. In one little lesson It’s impossible to tell everything, so here will be the most basic stages. Our drawing will include houses, a bridge, a river, and trees; in general, the drawing is not easy, so be patient. When you know how a drawing is constructed, you will be able to draw any street, square or picturesque corner of your city. Now let's try to draw a city with a pencil step by step.

  1. You will need a sheet of thick paper with a smooth matte surface, two pencils - hard and soft, and an eraser. First of all, we outline an imaginary horizon line. This is where the entire construction of our drawing begins. Draw a horizontal line through a thin sheet of paper hard pencil. For beginners, it’s better to do this with a ruler to make it more accurate. In the open air or when making quick sketches, be sure to try to draw “by eye”, without the help of tools. Experienced artists, most often, do not use either rulers or compasses. Thanks to many years of training, they have a well-developed eye and hand steadiness.

    Now we roughly designate a point on the horizontal line, this will be the point of our gaze, the center of the entire drawing. Then we mark the top point of the building on the left and draw a line through this point and the central one. We do the same with the buildings on the right. They are smaller in height because they are much further away. In the same way we draw a line through the very high point to the right and the central point of the horizon. We get the “framework” of the drawing and the guide lines, according to which we will build our entire drawing of the city.


  2. Another difficult stage– we begin to build all the city structures (bridge, buildings). On the houses on the left, thin lines indicate the places where the windows will then be located. See how they all converge again to one central point on the horizontal line. In the background there are houses of different heights and widths, and they “overlap” each other. We outline the river waves with barely visible shading; we will return to them later.


  3. Now let's start drawing. All additional lines constructions can be carefully erased with an eraser, restoring the desired contours of the drawing. We outline where and how the windows of the houses will be located on the right and left. We draw the buildings that are in the background in general, with a hint; there is no need to draw them in detail. The main thing is that the viewer gets the impression big city and many buildings. Shade the darkest parts of the picture. This should be done to check the overall tonal balance. We draw several trees in the foreground. So far, only their trunks and the thickest branches.


  4. We make the window openings darker tall buildings on the left, here and there we draw small decorative balconies, more voluminously we designate the corrugated roof and the shadow under it. We outline the details of the bridge. We need to show that it is made of rough stone, so we draw its texture with small short and broken lines. Again, no need to draw clearly, the bridge is far away. Therefore, leave it to the viewer to mentally imagine what the bridge is built from.


  5. Let's start working on the details of the drawing. On the left we make an almost black metal fence, we draw the shadows of the trees and their trunks more clearly. The water under the bridge will also be almost black. We draw the waves with broken lines for more contrast. We draw thin branches on the trees. At the base they will be thicker, and towards the top they become thinner and more transparent. Thanks to this, in the picture they look like a large fluffy and openwork “hat”.


  6. In the final drawing of the city, the most soft pencil draw small details. We return again to the buildings in the foreground, the trees, the water, the shadows under the bridge. Some houses are lighter, some are darker, we will show this with fine shading. We squint and check the overall tone.


To draw streets, buildings, bridges, roads, be sure to study the rules and laws of perspective; without this, it will be very difficult to draw a city with a pencil.

The city is where you might live. The city has many streets, houses, trees and people. There are small cities on Earth, and there are large cities - megacities - with a population of several million people. Stage 1. We will draw a piece of a city street that goes away from us into the distance. That is, in the foreground we will have large objects, as we move away from our eyes, the size of all elements will decrease. The rules of perspective in the drawing are used here. We draw two lines in the middle, they are parallel to each other. On the right we show two lines diverging in perspective. On the left is a line at the bottom and two lines forming an angle at the top.


Stage 2. Let's start drawing the walls of the houses. Ahead of us we draw two straight lines running parallel to each other. One is higher, the other is lower. From high line we move the line aside. This will be the wall of the building located in front of us. On the right we raise the wall and draw a door.

Stage 3. Now let's draw the roofs of the houses. On the left we make them pointed, since this house is visible to us from the side. On the right too. But the roof of the front house is positioned differently.

Stage 4. Now we will draw additional features under the roof of the left house. Below we show the line of the sidewalk. From it we build straight entry lines. On the right we draw wavy lines sidewalks going forward and turning to the side.

Stage 5. Let's continue drawing the door in the left house. And near the right house, in a small protrusion of the sidewalk, we draw a spreading tree that decorates this street.

Stage 6. The entrance to the left house is a door with a small canopy. Let's draw a window under the canopy. Next to the sidewalk near this house we show elements - dining tables and chairs. Let's draw a vase with flowers on the table. There is a cafe on the lower floor of the left building. And in the right house we will complete the elements on the front door.

Stage 7. We will show a trash can near the table. There is a hanging lamp above the entrance. It's not far away street lamp. On the right house we draw pipes on the roof.

Stage 8. Now we draw windows in all three houses. Please note that they are everywhere different types. Rectangular, square, arched. There are a lot of windows, especially in the house in the middle of the picture.

Stage 9. Now we erase all the sketches, leaving nothing unnecessary. This is what your drawing should look like: black and white version. You can, of course, make it brighter and color it. You will get a cityscape. Now you can, looking from the window of your apartment, also draw your city street if you live in the city. Do not forget the rule that objects in the foreground are larger, those in the background are smaller, and all lines must go into perspective.

Once the background has already been drawn, it's up to the buildings in front. Depicting them is also not difficult. However, it is worth remembering that in the sketch some buildings may touch each other.

Using colored pencils or paints, color the image so that light shades predominate at first, and dark shades at the end. The sky can follow the sunset theme, starting with a yellow-orange tone, turning into a slightly dirty pink, and then into a gray-blue.

And if this is a metropolis, which is even easier to draw, then trees will replace tall skyscrapers and smaller houses.


Houses are marked on a piece of paper. There is no need to immediately draw thick lines, which will be difficult to erase later. Parallel lines connect to form houses. In every house, windows are drawn using a ruler. All buildings must be drawn in detail. Mistakes are allowed because they can be erased. In order for the drawing to acquire a certain volume, panels, back walls, and shadows are drawn in buildings. Having calculated the exact location of the floors, draw all straight lines. No matter how small the house is in size, all its details should look quite real.


Once the houses are finished, you can move on to the green spaces. A ruler certainly won’t help in drawing a tree or bush, except for an approximate comparison of parameters. Depending on the level of knowledge of the artist himself, the tree will either be drawn in a complex manner, with bark, a hollow, leaves on the branches, or it will remain poorly drawn.   • The second option is to feel like a real artist, and also to arouse the interest of others in your art by going outside. First, the painter decides on the place that he will depict in the picture. Then he takes a folding chair or just a rug, sits on the nearest bench and takes out a sheet of paper with pencils, erasers, and a ruler.

Don't stop there. A purposeful person who wants to learn how to draw understands that this is a very long process. One tree can take hours, days, or even weeks to draw.

3. I begin to fill large color spots in the landscape. The first fill is light houses in the background and greenery behind them.

4. I fill in the shadow spot on the sidewalk. Closer it is darker, moving away it brightens. This will convey the depth of space.

At the same time I paint the house spot on the left. While the stain is damp, I introduce darker architectural details into it. Since this part of the composition is in the shadows and is not of interest, it is important that the details do not protrude. A slight spreading of the lines in this case is what is needed.

5. I add a pink-ocher spot to the shadow side of the house on the right. And at the same time, in the same color – the shadows on the cafe umbrellas.

6. I introduce a “scene” of greenery from a nearby tree.

At the same time, I try to paint the spot generally, without details inside. But the silhouette of the leaves along the edge should be expressive. Therefore, I carefully copy how the leaves go, what shape they are, how they gather into a branch.

I paint greens in two colors. First, with a lighter, olive color, then, while the stain is damp, I melt a darker shade into it.

I also describe green trees in pots along the street. They are illuminated, so the color of the greens on them is lighter and warmer. As you move away, the color becomes cooler and bluish. This shows the depth of space, the distance of the object.

7. When the main spots of color are set, you can move on to smaller details.

Shadows appear under the roofs, windows, chairs in the cafe.

8. The details make the cityscape. Lanterns, balconies, roof tiles.

However, I do not strive to work them equally carefully. Lightness and, perhaps, even carelessness of details are important to me. I do not draw every window, but only give a hint of it with one stroke.

9. Finally, I add details to foreground, I draw lines between the sidewalk slabs. This breaks up the boring large spot of shadow and, moreover, the lines direct the movement of the viewer’s eye deeper into the picture, where the main action takes place - a cafe waiting for visitors for lunch.

The sketch is completed. I can go to lunch too... :)
