Rap by famous rappers. Who is the best rapper of our time? New King of the West Coast

We incur the wrath of the gods by compiling the top popularity of Russian rappers based on social networks.

How do you know which rapper is cooler? By the ability to weave rhymes or by a killer flow? Or maybe by the number of bullet holes in the body or Grammy on the shelf? Or take touring or iTunes sales? Perhaps everyone here will have their own measures of coolness, fame and popularity. But measuring how much a rapper is loved by his fans is not so difficult - it’s 2016, and relatively objective numbers of popularity are right in plain sight - on musicians’ social networks.

With the help of our friend from the public Imho Analytics, we tried to compile a popularity rating of Russian rappers based on social networks. Why social networks? Because they have long become as commonplace as aluminum pan in the kitchen or smartphone in your pocket. Even the neighbors’ grandmothers have accounts in Odnoklassniki, and only DMX still doesn’t know how to use a computer. And even despite the possibility of cheating, numbers from social networks are more stable and generalized data than, for example, music sales figures or the density of the touring schedule.

What did we think?

We calculated the average number of subscribers of musicians on the social networks Twitter, Instagram and VKontakte, because... many listeners follow their favorite musicians on several social networks at once, and we didn’t want to inflate the numbers due to duplicate information.

Now let's go.

As you can see, the final ten turned out to be quite varied - here you have the veteran Karandash, and youngsters like Basota, and punk connoisseurs Anacondaz. Unexpectedly, Lupercal closes the top, which has been in the news all this year, and in the fall took part in revolutionizing the game by releasing the release “House of a Thousand Drafts.” Somewhere nearby there should have been Pharaoh, who was also popular throughout the past year, but the Dead Dynasty association shared a VK account, so he did not pass the competition mechanics.

Here we have an even more diverse ten. Rounding out her parody projects are Bread and Big Russian Boss, sweet-voiced Tati coexists with labelmate and hero of the year Scryptonite, and Kravets and Joniboy dilute the patriotism of Misha Mavashi and Harry Topor with romance.

Strong rap fighters concentrated in the middle of the list - confidently and without surprises. ST starts the top ten, and closes it with Slim, who is almost neck and neck with his Centr colleague Ptah - 125 thousand subscribers versus 128. In the middle of the list is the name-dropping master Yanix, Smokey Mo, Rem Digga, The Chemodan Clan, MC Doni, Tony Raut and hit rock 25/17.

Perhaps the most controversial and interesting ten, about which the editorial office argued the most. Is it possible to include Dolphin in this list for old times sake? How close are Dorn or Jah Khalib and Bianca to rap? Also pay attention to the 14th position - the Ukrainian rapper Yarmak turned out to have a strong and large community fans.

If the artists of the Gazgolder label are evenly distributed according to the rating, then the representatives Black Star were aiming for the top ten. There are four of them here at once - Mot, Christina Si, L "One and Timati. Plus Dzhigan, who left the ranks of the Black Star mafia. At the same time, the first place with an impressive margin from Basta was taken by Timati, and Oksimiron, who flashed literally everywhere, only closes the top ten.

What do you need to know before you start swearing in the comments?

1. The data is taken for the end of December and the first days of January of this year. Over the past time, the artists managed to gain a thousand or two additional subscribers, but due to the holidays, activity was not the highest and these numbers did not affect the final results.

2. Groups like Caste, Caspian Gruz, TGC and others had counts general indicators and individual followers on musicians’ accounts.

3. The sum of subscribers and individual data on social networks were rounded separately, so when summing up the data, the final picture may vary upward or downward by a thousand, but this does not in any way affect the final places.

Rap is a relatively young musical direction, but it is firmly rooted in modern culture, giving birth to dozens of heroes, and is not going to disappear anywhere. It is quite difficult to choose several of the best singers and teams of the hip-hop scene, but we still dare to present the ten best rappers, which include our contemporaries and representatives of the old school who stood at the origins of rap.

Ice Cube is considered one of the greatest rappers of all time, who began as a member of the group N.W.A., becoming the author of most of its songs, and then continued his career as a solo artist. First solo album AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted was an immediate hit, setting the bar he never stooped below.

Of course, the top ten rappers couldn't do without Snoop Dogg. The musician was helped to rise to the top of the hip-hop scene by his good friend Dr. Dre. He stands out from other rappers with his rather calm lyrical style of performing songs.

A representative of the old school rap, he became a symbol of the 80s hip-hop scene, and his song Mama Said Knock You Out became a true classic. LL Cool J turned out to be not only a talented rapper, but also a good actor, TV presenter and businessman who owns his own clothing brand and co-owns several record labels.

7. Kurtis Blow (Curtis Blow)

Curtis Blow became a pioneer who made rap music popular and proved that you can make money from it. It was he who became godfather old school turnip. If you don't agree, let's listen to The Breaks.

6. Rakim (Rakim)

Rakim is a representative of the old school, who suddenly became famous after recording the mega hit Paid in Full, which immediately entered the top ten most popular songs on radio stations. It was his clear articulation and complex texts, which he perfected for weeks, that had strong influence on modern generation rappers.

This is not one person, but a group that stood at the origins of hip-hop and determined the modern look of rap, which boldly combined different styles. They were the first to risk releasing an album of songs, which immediately became a hit. It was they who helped Aerosmith return to the stage by recording the song Walk This Way with them in 1986. Real old school, who has returned back to the stage, is again gathering entire audiences, turning them on.

4. Eminem

The only white rapper in the top ten in the world. Dr. helped him get onto the big stage. Dre, and then everything was done by his talent, lyrics on topics that are painful for society and Eminem’s unique style of performing the text.

3. The Notorious B.I. G.

Notorious B.I. G. also known as Biggie, was the East Coast turnip king. An early death prevented him from becoming number one in the rap world, but he is still one of the legends of the hip-hop world. During the mourning, several hundred radio stations across America honored his memory with 30 seconds of silence.

2. Jay-Z

New King an East Coast turnip who rose from the bottom to make a half-billion-dollar fortune. His manner and style of performance is unique, for which he is loved by millions of people around the world.

I think you've already guessed who is considered the number one rapper in the world, the king of the west coast, 2Pac. He was killed young at 25, rumored to have been ordered by Notorious B.I. G. king of the east coast turnips, but still made the top 100 best performers of all times and peoples, having sold more than 75 million albums during his lifetime alone.

The year 2018 is coming to an end and the time has come to sum up its results. In previous publications, we looked at who, in our opinion, and what tracks are. In the same article, we will analyze the successes of foreign rap artists and determine the 10 best among them. We immediately warn you that the author’s opinion may differ from your personal one, but for this we have comments in which everyone can write their top 10.

As for the criteria for measuring success, they will mainly relate to the actual quality of the music. Of course, we will not ignore the number of sales and streams of albums and singles (after all, in our time this is also an extremely important indicator), but we will put the musical component at the forefront.

Top 10 foreign rappers 2018

10. Jay Rock

TDE's oldest and very first signee has certainly been in over his head this year. Jay had released good albums before, but he was unable to truly emerge from the shadows of Kendrick Lamar and Schoolboy Q. The release of “Redemption” became best job Los Angeles rapper today. The excellent singles “Win”, “King`s Dead” (both Grammy nominated) and “OSOM” remain firmly in the memory and are accompanied by a very cool video. After the release of the record, Jay Rock actively toured and did promotional activities. Jay’s success is directly related to the wise policy of the major Interscope and his native label Top Dawg Entertainment, which provided the rapper with a “window” between the releases of other top musicians, allowing him to gather maximum attention to his person. It should be noted that the artist recently announced that he is working on new material and is not going to stop there. We are looking forward to it.

9.6lack

The young talent from Atlanta can rightfully count 2018 as an asset. 6lack (pronounced “black”) released an album called “East Atlanta Love Letter” in September and successfully passed the so-called “second album” test. The guy not only raps, but also sings well and writes his own beats. His hits “OTW”, “Switch” and “Nonchalant” brought the artist from the ranks of up-and-comers to the elite of American urban music. This is confirmed by joint tracks with Ty Dolla Sign, J. Cole and Future. Also, 2018 became very important in terms of the rapper’s personal life - his first daughter was born, who actually appears on the cover of the album along with her new father. We have no doubt that great things await this artist in the future.

8. Joyner Lucas

Another representative younger generation, which is already showing all the makings of moving the titans of rap from their homes. Joyner shot with the song “I`m Not A Racist”, which in the era of Trump and the active development of social debate on racism, has become very relevant. In addition, the Massachusetts native attracted attention with his excellent reading technique and witty texts. But his real breakthrough was his participation in Eminem’s “Kamikaze” album. The song “Lucky You” is one of the best in the playlist, and Lucas himself delivers lines as good as Marshall, which, you see, happens extremely rarely. Now the rapper is signed to Atlantic Records, actively performs and is preparing several projects at once: one solo, the other with R&B singer Chris Brown. It should also be noted that Joyner Lucas recently started a beef with Canadian Tory Lanez. The artists managed to record several freestyles directed against each other. According to most critics and journalists, the American won. To all of Lucas’s successes, it is worth adding that “I’m Not A Racist” and “Lucky You” were nominated for a Grammy 2019.

7. Drake

Drizzy has had quite a roller coaster ride this year in terms of career successes/failures, but in the end he still managed to put 2018 under his belt. First, let's talk about failures. Pusha T smashed Drake to smithereens with his diss track “The Story Of Adidon,” in which he revealed to the world what the Canadian hitmaker had been hiding for several years: Drake has illegitimate son from a former porn actress, with whom he practically does not maintain any relationship. This news broke instantly and the whole world learned about Drizzy the not so pleasant truth. With nowhere to go, Drake went all in and admitted defeat. But later he benefited from it. The album “Scorpion,” on which the rapper openly talks about having an illegitimate child, started at number one on the Billboard Top R&B & Hip-Hop Albums and other charts around the world. “Scorpion” received a platinum certificate, and the songs “Nice For What”, “In My Feelings” and “God`s Plan” settled in the playlists of music lovers on for a long time. One gets the impression that no matter how things go for Drake, it is almost impossible to move him from the annual top.

6. Royce Da 5`9

The second half of the year passed quite calmly for Detroit MC Royce Da 5`9 and, apart from the guest participation on the Eminem album, was not memorable for anything. But what a first! First, in March, Royce and DJ Premier released the long-awaited sequel to PRhyme, which received praise from both critics and ordinary listeners. The release easily ranks among the top best records of 2018. Well that was just the beginning. In May, Ryan Montgomery (the rapper's real name) released the solo album “Book Of Ryan” - a very personal album, which, according to many, is the best in the rapper’s long discography. Royce is an example of a mature and skilled musician who has found his way after years of searching. Listening to him, one gets the impression that every year he only gets better. We are waiting for new songs and hope that Eminem’s colleague is not going to lower the bar below the given level.

5. XXXTentacion

XXXTentacion's life ended tragically on June 18, 2018. A young rapper at the height of his fame was shot dead in his own car. Naturally, after this event, attention to Ax’s person increased enormously and he was proclaimed a “martyr,” “the new Tupac,” etc. Be that as it may, one must agree that among the representatives of the “new school” this guy’s music stood apart. In March 2018, the artist’s second album “?” was released and received public recognition. Single “SAD!” and has become one of the most popular songs on streaming services. It’s not worth saying that “?” and “SAD!” after his death, they began to rapidly rise in various charts and overtake the competitors of the now deceased rapper. In 2018, Ax also had downfalls: they were mainly related to legal proceedings regarding domestic violence against his ex-girlfriend. Since his appearance on the world stage, XXXTentacion's personality has always been controversial and every rap lover has his own impression of the artist, but there is no denying the fact that the influence of his music on the younger generation has been enormous. Even if he was with us for a short time.

4. Travis Scott

Travis Scott today combines in his work all the components of a modern mainstream rap artist necessary for success: a melodic, sing-song style of rapping, bassy droning instrumentals, a playboy image, connections with the most popular players in rap and, to top it all, collaborations with world-famous fashion houses. . A sort of Kanye West and Asap Rocky rolled into one. Travis's talent is that he can write hits. His album “Astroworld”, although not a big innovation, consists entirely of hit songs, any of which could pass for a single. The most popular was “Sicko Mode” with Drake. She, like the entire album, is nominated for a Grammy 2019 and is likely to receive her award. We also must not forget that in 2018, “Astroworld” became one of the best-selling albums of the year, receiving platinum from the RIAA. Watching Travis's growing popularity, one gets the impression that there is more to come. great success- primarily in commercial terms.

3. J. Cole

In 2018, J. Cole scored several big victories in the professional field. The most important thing was - conceptual work about drug addiction and problems associated with it. Cole, as always, shook up the world of hip-hop, forcing him to look at the state of affairs in the industry and society from a different angle. In addition, the Dreamville boss is one of the few contemporary artists (Kendrick Lamar comes to mind) who manages to make conscious music and sell it well at the same time. “KOD” set 24-hour streaming records on Apple Music and Spotify, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and also allowed Cole to become the first musician in history to have three singles simultaneously in the top 10 on the Billboard Hot chart. 100. The record went platinum.

In addition to “KOD” in 2018, Cole can rightfully be called the “king of collaborations.” Almost any song Jay appeared on automatically became a single. Just look at our list: “OSOM” with Jay Rock and “Boblo Boat” with Royce Da 5`9 are some of the best songs on the albums. In addition, Jermaine has cool collaborations with his wards Cozz, Bas and J.I.D., as well as with 6lack and Wale. And this is after he announced that he would no longer work with other artists. Overall, in a year when J.Cole is actively working on new music, his competitors are having a tough time.

2. Pusha T

One of the most noticeable in foreign hip-hop in 2018 there was Pusha T. The current head of G.O.O.D Music joined forces with his former boss Kanye West and released the 7-track album “DAYTONA”, called by some a “masterpiece” and “album of the year”. Whether this is true or not is up to you to decide personally, but the release really deserves attention. By and large, “DAYTONA” is one of the few bright spots in the impenetrable darkness that shrouded Kanye’s person in 2018. Here he did his best. Pusha himself was also at his best, delivering his best songs since The Clipse.

A separate point is the beef with Drake, which we have already mentioned. The push was stronger and almost everyone admits it. Most recently, the prolific rapper began searching for new talent in the 1800 Seconds project. It seems that the artist from Virginia Beach has found his path in the modern world of show business and continues to successfully stride to new heights.

1. Eminem

We give the palm for the title of best rapper of 2018 to Eminem. After his unconvincing album “Revival” last year, Em, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, managed to regain his reputation with “Kamikaze”. With this release, he declared war on the entire industry: young “trappers”, journalists, social networks, his old enemies and listeners who criticized him earlier. And, you know, the daring veteran defeated everyone. He overwhelmed critics with his witty arguments, won the beef with Machine Gun Kelly without noticing the latter's disses, and put Joe Budden in his place, who allowed himself to make unflattering statements about the maestro. Em was even nominated for a Grammy, which he, by the way, criticized. latest achievements Marshall should be noted for his next freestyle, which will be quite difficult to surpass, because it lasts more than 11 minutes. Overall, Eminem once again proved that he is one of the greatest MCs in the history of hip-hop and is ready to fight for this title with anyone.

A boy named Marshall Bruce Mathers III was born in Missouri in 1972, as they say, into a dysfunctional family. The parents of the future king of hip-hop got married when Marshall's mother was only 15 years old. He was born two years later. And after some time, his father abandoned the family. Moving from place to place, mother and son settled in. The guy has had a love for music since childhood. For several years, Marshall and his friends tried to do something worthwhile. Once upon a time the great Dr. Dre heard the track The Slim Shady - and away we go... Eminem has 15 Grammy and Oscar awards for the song Lose yourself, which he wrote in one sitting. The track was written for the autobiography Eight Mile, in which the singer played a rapper named Rabbit. In 2010, the singer recorded several popular duets - with Rihanna, Pink, Nicki Minaj and Kob. Today, Eminem firmly occupies a leading position in the hip-hop industry. In his personal life, Marshall repeated the fate of his mother: at the age of 15, he met 13-year-old Kimberly Scott at school. The young people got married, but the marriage did not last long. The attempt to improve relations failed miserably. Exes get joint custody only daughter Hayley.

Interesting fact: Eminem writes all his lyrics in a notebook, by hand. No computer!

Quote:“I say most of the nasty things from pure heart, but a lot of my rhymes are just meant to make people laugh. This is a great comedy. Anyone who has even a drop of humor will understand when I’m joking and when I’m serious.”

Tupac Shakur

The rapper was born in New York City in the Harlem neighborhood on June 16, 1971. Tupac's mother, Afeni Shakur, was a member of the Black Panther group and actively fought for the rights of blacks. Tupac didn't know his father. In 1992, the guy moved to Los Angeles, but despite his creativity, he was involved in illegal things. In 1993, a girl accused him of rape. Tupac received a sentence and went to prison, where he recorded the album Me Against The World, which became multi-platinum. While in prison, the rapper married Keisha Morris, but after his release he filed for divorce. In February 1996, Tupac's main creation was released - the double album All Eyez On Me, which became nine times platinum. In September of the same year, Tupac was shot dead under unclear circumstances. His car was shot at 12 times. Tupac is recognized as one of the most successful hip-hop artists of all time. He is the first rapper to receive a monument.

Interesting fact: Before becoming a rapper, Tupac studied ballet.

Quote:“Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is that which dies in us while we are still alive. Never give up."

Jay Z

Shawn Cole Carter was born in Brooklyn on December 4, 1969. His father left the family when he was very young (again!). As a teenager, Sean worked in a grocery store. Like everyone else cool rappers, Mr. Carter had problems with the law: he was even shot 6 times. Sean entered Higher vocal school in Brooklyn and graduated with honors. Started recording in the early 1990s. Jay Z, along with his friends Damon Dash and Kareem Biggs Burke, founded music company Roc-a-Fella Records. The musician's second album was released in 1997. Literally a year later, the compositions of Beyoncé's future husband gained popularity and were heard from every iron. In September 2001, the singer released his third album entitled The Blueprint. Already in the first week, about 450,000 copies were sold. This album was later recognized as one of the best hip-hop releases in history. 13 Jay Z albums have reached the top of Billboard. This is a record among all solo performers. In addition, the rapper is an excellent businessman and owner of a multimillion-dollar fortune. By the way, his wife, the beautiful Beyoncé, greatly contributed to this. The couple is considered one of the most influential in show business.

Interesting fact: the singer invested his money in Carol's Daughter cosmetics line.

Quote:“We change people through communication, not through censorship.”

Snoop Dogg

The incredible Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. was born on October 20, 1971. The musician’s father left his family (what’s that?!) almost immediately after his birth. WITH early years Dog sang in the church choir, and also played the piano and composed music. From his mother, the guy received the nickname Snoopy - in honor of the dog from the cartoon. After graduating from school, Kelvin entered California Polytechnic College. However, he ended up in prison for six months. Upon his release, he decided to take up music. After some time, the records reached the table of the famous producer Dr. Dre (yes, we have deja vu too). In 1993, Snoop's first solo album, Doggystyle, was released. It is considered a true rap classic. But not only music is interesting to Snoopy: he loves to flash on big screen. He has roles in the films “Bones”, “Training Day”, “Black Business” and others. Twelve successful albums, many compositions recorded in duets with other musicians, made Snoop Dogg one of the most popular artists modernity. He also proved himself in business: successful collections of shoes, clothes, cigars and headphones. In Snoopy’s personal life, everything is okay: he is married to his high school girlfriend, with whom he has three children.

Interesting fact: Snoop Dogg is a fan of the vampire series True Blood. He even dreamed of starring in it. But the creator - Alan Ball - refused him this. Out of grief, the musician recorded the song Oh Sookie, dedicated to the main character of the series.

Quote:“I can only say two things about my past: I always remember it and I never regret it.”

Dr. Dre

God-given producer and simply cool musician Andre Romell Young was born in Los Angeles on February 18, 1965. At the time of the birth of the baby, the mother was only 16 and the father was only 17. The parents soon divorced. The future tycoon studied very poorly, and his work somehow didn’t work out. That's when he started DJing in California clubs. At the age of 17, Andre founded World Class Wreckin’ Cru, and a little later the NWA group Niggaz With Attitude appeared. NWA's first album, Straight Outta Compton, with the track Fuck Tha Police, caused a lot of controversy. In addition, the group began to be pursued by the FBI, which brought them even more authority among fans.
