Nikolai Fomenko developed an interest in motorsport while still studying at the institute; he trained on a Lada, tried to seriously engage in karting, but then there were no opportunities for this in Leningrad.

In 1994, Vlad Listyev invited Nikolai to the team of stars for the so-called “Race for Survival”. He began to train seriously under the guidance of Igor Kuznetsov. The result of year-long training and races were several victories in the “Racing for Survival” in 1996, and then a bronze award in the Danian Rallycross Cup.

In the 1997 season, Nikolai Fomenko climbed to the third step of the podium three times in road racing as a member of the Miller Pilot team and eventually won the title of Russian champion. In the same year, he became a bronze medalist at the St. Petersburg Open Championship.

In 2004, as part of the Freisinger YUKOS Motorsport team, he won the FIA ​​Grand Touring international auto racing championship in the N-GT class. During the season, he stood on the podium for the first time in the race in Magny-Cours (France), taking 3rd place. Marussia was created in 2007 by two enthusiasts - Nikolai Fomenko and Efim Ostrovsky, an entrepreneur. Sports cars must be produced in strictly limited quantities, up to five units of each model. This rule ensures a sufficient level of exclusivity for the car. But in this case, production profitability is impossible, or sports cars will be prohibitively expensive.

Sports models

However, Marussia Motors already announced in 2008 the creation of the first Russian sports car. Many considered Nikolai Fomenko’s project to be overly ambitious and unpromising, but after just one year, the Marusya company presented a pilot Marussia sports car, in two trim levels at once - models B1 and B2. And in the spring of 2010, at the Moscow Motor Show, a presentation of the Marussia F2 concept car took place, the main characteristics of which can be classified as crossovers. Formula 1

In December 2009, Marussia Motors applied to participate in Formula 1 competitions and was accepted into the format of a separate team under the Marussia Virgin Racing brand.
